- Muriel L. Hankes (1917-2011)
Waverly - Muriel Lucille Hankes, 94, of Waverly, formerly of Charles City,
died Thursday, Nov. 24, at Bartels Lutheran Home in Waverly.
She was born Nov. 2, 1917, in Belmond, daughter of Frederick and Henrietta
Smidt Gartz. She married Charles Edward Hankes Dec. 7, 1940, in Dubuque.
He died in 1979.
She attended rural country school. She was a member of First
Congregational Church, past president of the Women's Fellowship, American
Legion Auxiliary and Charles City Women's Club.
Survived by: three sons, Arlyn (Connie) of Mead, Neb., Dennis (Linda) of
Kelsey and David (Margaret) of Waterloo; a daughter, Karen (Arthur)
Simpson of Waverly; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren two
sisters, Leota Talley of Stillwater, Okla., and Maxine McVey-Whitty of
Belmond; and two sisters-in-law, Dolly Gartz of Leavenworth, Kan., and
Benita Gartz of Schertz, Texas.
Preceded in death by: three brothers, Leo Smith, William Gartz and Gary
Gartz; and a sister, Dorothy Gartz.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Congregational Church, with burial
in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, both in Charles City. Public visitation from
5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City, and for an hour
before services Tuesday at the church.

Charles City, died Thursday, November 24, 2011 at Bartels Lutheran Home,
Waverly.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Congregational
Church, Charles City with Rev. Forrest Cornelius officiating. Burial will
be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City with Arlyn Hankes,
Dennis Hankes, David Hankes, Arthur Simpson, Jeffrey Simpson, and Brian
McVey serving as pallbearers.
Friends may call 5-7 p.m. Monday at Hauser Funeral Home, Charles City and
Tuesday at the church an hour prior to the service.
Muriel Lucille Hankes was born November 2, 1917, in Belmond, the daughter
of Frederick and Henrietta (Smidt) Gartz. She attended rural country
school. On December 7, 1940 in Dubuque, she was united in marriage to
Charles Edward Hankes. To this union, four children were born. Charles
served in WW II, and upon returning the family made their home in Clarion
for ten years. Charles' work took the family to Charles City where they
made their home. Charles died in 1979.
In 2007, Muriel moved to Waverly. Muriel was very active in the community.
She was a deacon at the First Congregational Church, served on the
Prudential Board, and was a past president of the Women's fellowship. She
was past president of the American Legion Auxiliary, past worthy High
Priestess of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, past Matron of
the Order of the Eastern Star, and past president of the Charles City
Women's Club. She also held memberships in the Pythian Sisters, the Floyd
County Hospital Auxiliary, and was an active volunteer at Comprehensive
Systems.
Living family members include four children, Arlyn (Connie) Hankes of
Mead, NE, Dennis (Linda) Hankes of Kesley, David (Margaret) Hankes of
Waterloo, and Karen (Arthur) Simpson of Waverly; six grandchildren, Pamela
(Mike) Boyajian of Ariz., Kathryn (Randy) Atkinson of Cedar Rapids, Gina
(Rick) Gerke of Holland, Theresa Hankes of Waterloo, Robin (Shannon)
Conaway of Waterloo, and Jeffrey Simpson of Waverly; six great
grandchildren; two sisters, Leota Talley of Stillwater, Okla., Maxine
McVey-Whitty of Belmond; two sisters-in-law, Dolly Gartz of Leavenworth,
Kans., and Benita Gartz of Schertz, Tex.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles in 1979; three brothers,
Leo Smith, William Gartz, Gary Gartz; and a sister, Dorothy Gartz.
