Beulah Augusta (Goll) Hummel

1930 - 2014

September 13, 1930 - March 2, 2014

Garner - Beulah A. (Goll) Hummel, age 83, of Garner, formerly of Klemme, died, Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Concord Care Center, Garner, following a brief battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 11, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ, Klemme. The Rev. Donna Buckman will be officiating. Burial will be in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme. Visitation will be on Thursday, April 10, 2014, from 5-8 p.m. at the Andrews Funeral Home, 528 East Main St., Klemme, and will continue one hour prior to the services at the church Friday. Memorials are suggested to Immanuel Reformed UCC Church-Klemme, Hospice of North Iowa, or to the donor's choice.

Beulah Augusta (Goll) Hummel was born Sept. 13, 1930, to Paul and Erma Anna (Priebe) Goll on her Grandpa Julius Priebe's farm in Twin Lake Township. She lived her childhood through the Great Depression. When she was 7 years old, her parents bought their own farm in Ell Township and moved there with Beulah in 1938. Beulah started school in Twin Lake Township No. 1 and then transferred to Ell Township No. 5, graduating from the 8th grade in 1944. She attended Klemme High School and graduated with Leland, KHS class of 1948. On June 3, 1951, she married her high school sweetheart, Leland Hugh Hummel at Immanuel Reformed Church in Klemme. They were blessed with two daughters, Diane Faye and Joleen Ann.

In 1952, they started farming across the road from her parents, and then moved to Paul and Erma's farm in 1954, where they farmed together for 42 years. Beulah helped Leland on the farm driving tractor, watching gates for cattle, raising sheep and many chickens, and selling eggs. They moved into Klemme in December 1989 and just recently to the Prairie View Apartments, Garner, in September 2013.

An avid gardener, Beulah kept a very large garden of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Many of her beautiful flowers she shared with others and entered her best ones in the Open Flower Show at the Hancock County Fair. Her mission was to pull weeds anywhere she went. Every weed was in trouble! Beulah loved to take pictures to remember special occasions, everyday events, people, places, cakes, and flowers. She was never without her camera, saving pictures for memories, and giving many to friends and relatives. She loved to collect praying hands salt and pepper shakers. She was well known for her baking. She decorated cakes and made coffee cakes and homemade breads, with her friends lovingly naming her rolls "Beulah Buns" which she gave to the sick, to the families of the deceased, church events, and as special treats at Halloween (with some coming back for another fresh-baked roll.)

Beulah enjoyed her meetings with the neighborhood Ell Township women's ODO Club. She was a 4-H leader when her girls were members of the North Ell Tip Toppers. She was an active member of Immanuel Reformed UCC Church in Klemme, where she was baptized, confirmed, and married. She sang in the church choir and was active in the Women's Fellowship, on many committees, and especially enjoyed visitation to the shut-ins. Beulah taught many years of Sunday School and Bible School. Her grandson, Andy, and granddaughter, Holly, would come out to play at the farm after Bible School, which she looked forward to. Beulah and Leland enjoyed traveling, motorcycling, camping at the Iowa State Fair and local campgrounds, and spending time with family and friends. They were members of the North Iowa CB Club, North Iowa Road Riders motorcycle club, and Garner Saddle Club. During the winters they went south, spending time in Texas, Florida, or Arizona. Most of the time in recent years was spent at Winter Ranch in Alamo, Texas. She loved playing games and putting jigsaw puzzles together, laughing with friends and telling stories. She was always helping others and visiting those who were ill. She was friendly to all. She was a big supporter of the community, and most recently was spreading the word about the upcoming Klemme Quasquicentennial, handing out magnet reminders and giving Klemme T-shirts.

Beulah is survived by her husband of 62 years, Leland Hummel, Garner; two daughters, Diane (Curt) Stadtlander, Goodell, and Joleen (Ben) Chiodo, Murray; granddaughter, Holly (Ronnie) Vickers, Urbandale, and grandson, Andy (Aubrey) Stadtlander, West Des Moines; great-grandchildren, Paisley and Kaedyn Vickers, and Ashlyn Stadtlander; step-granddaughters, Bernadette (Tim) Norton, Creston, Margo Castillo (Corey Hackett) Creston, Lynn (Philip) Dedrick, Creston, and Dena Chiodo (Kelly Storm), Derby; step-great-grandchildren, Seighan, Keirnan and Caprial Norton, Amber and Danielle Castillo; Wraithe Dedrick; Briel, Ariana, and Ben Storm; brothers-in-law, Ronald (Beverly) Hummel, Ankeny, and Gary (Ann) Hummel Indianapolis, Indiana, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Erma (Priebe) Goll; and infant brother, Merle Paul Goll; brother-in-law, Jon Finlayson; and sister-in-law, Lois Finlayson. Andrews Funeral Home, Klemme, Iowa.
