Mason City - Paul J. Hughes, 79, of 1324 N. Hampshire Place, Mason City,
died Saturday (July 23, 1994) at home.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson
Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania, Mason City, with the Rev. Merlin
Ackerson of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be
in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
The family requests memorials be given to the First United Methodist
Church or Hospice of North Iowa.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and until
time of service on Tuesday.
Paul J. Hughes was born the son of Richard J. and Maude (Simon) Hughes on
April 10, 1915, in Ruthven, Iowa. Paul graduated from Klemme High School
in 1932. He then graduated from the College of Commerce at the University
of Iowa in 1937. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 in World War
II. He worked for Iowa Hardware/Iowa Kemper Insurance as a treasurer for
43 years, retiring in 1980.
He married Helen E. Horn on Oct. 30, 1942, at the Old John Street Church,
the Oldest Methodist Church in the United States, in New York City, New
York. He enjoyed golfing. He was a member of First United Methodist Church
and the Methodist Men's Club, he was a former member of the Exchange Club
and the Elks and Mason City Country Club.
Survivors include his wife, Helen E. Hughes, Mason City; two daughters,
Sheri Siesseger and husband Frederick, Burke, Va., Gale M. McCourt and
husband David, Mason City; one granddaughter, Marie Sieddeger, Burke, Va.;
and one brother, Richard E. Hughes, Sun Lakes, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister in
infancy.
