The First Accident
The first mishap happened shortly after midnight when a westbound auto
driven by William Luke, 18, struck a large pony, which had broken loose and
wondered out on the roadway in front of the Mitchell Bock farm. The pony,
owned by Bock, was killed. ---------
About 15 minutes later or so, as Dr. Fuller, Garner, was driving to the
scene of the accident and was just approaching it, when the second accident
took place. He was on his way to give medical attention to the injured in
the first crash. The cars met almost head-on. Dr, Fuller was wearing a seat
belt. Soon after the crash, he started treating the injured.
A highway patrolman related that an officer from Klemme, Carl Franzen, had
attempted to flag down the car driven by Jernegan prior to the accident, but
failed to get them stopped.
Highway patrolman Darwin Berry, Garner, said all three autos probably are,
or nearly so, total losses. He did relate there were a few other cars in the
area when the second accident occurred. It is related, too, that Franzen was
able to stop other cars approaching the scene from the east, although they
do come over a little elevation in the roadway from that direction.
