- Larry R. Johnson
Herndon, Va. - Lt. Col. Larry R. Johnson, U.S.A.F. (Retired), died on
Thursday (July 30, 1998) at his home in Herndon.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11,
1998, at the Fort Myer Chapel, Arlington Cemetery, Arlington, Va.
Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery, with full military
honors.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on
Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, at Green Funeral Home721 Elden St., Herndon, Va.
Memorials may be given in his name, to the American Meteorological
Society, 45 Beacon St., Boston, Mass. 02154.
He is the husband of Laurie E. Johnson; the father of Julie Anne Kivisto,
of Mason City, Iowa; and Heather Lynn Johnson, of Herndon, Va; one
grandson, Nicholas Brandon Kivisto; his mother, Minnie Hansen Johns; and a
brother, Roger Johnson of Prescott, Ariz.

Area servicemen earn promotions
Air Force Maj. Larry R. Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold A. Johnson, Klemme,
has been selected for promotion to lieutenant colonel.
Johnson is chief of the Air Force Weather Personnel Assignments Office at
Randolph Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is responsible for assignments
of 5,000 Air Force weather personnel stationed at 300 locations worldwide, as
well as planning future Air Force weather personnel and education requirements.
He will assume his new rank on Aug. 1.
Johnson graduated from Klemme High School in 1962 and from Mason City Junior
College in1964. He earned both bachelor's and master's degrees in meteorology
from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and is a 1982 graduate of the Air
Force's Command and Staff College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, Ala, His
assignments have also included Thailand, Illinois, Oklahoma, Nebraska,
Wisconsin, Washington D.C., and Texas. He is a multiple recipient of the Air
Force Commendation Medal and Air Force Meritorious Service Medal.
Prior to entering the Air Force in 1965, Johnson was employed by the Klemme Coop
Grain Company and by Marshall and Swift Inc., of Mason City. He is married to
the former Ruth A. Frelund, a 1964 graduate of Mason City High School and the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Selmer O. Frelund of Mason City. They have two
daughters, Julie, 17, and Heather, 13. source: Globe
