Ethel Volkman
Mason City - Ethel Volkman, 88, of Mason City, formerly of Nora Springs,
died Friday (April 7, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Nora Springs
Christian church, with the Rev. William Lemke and the Rev. Sharon Sauerers
officiating. Burial will be at Park Cemetery in Nora Springs.
Visitation will be held from 1 until 3 p.m. Sunday at the Hogan Bremer
Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., in Mason City. Visitation will slao be
held from 5 until 7 p.m. Sunday at the Shecler Colonial Chapel, 114 N.
Hawkeye Ave. in Nora Springs.
Memorials may be directed to the Ethel Volkman Memorial Fund.
Ethel was born April 6, 1912, the daughter of William and Ethel (Whitney)
Lemke, rural Garner. She graduated from Klemme High School in 1931. She and
her sister moved to Mason City soon after graduation.
She was employed at Weeds Pharmacy for a number of years. On Sept. 12, 1937,
she was united in marriage to Arnold A. Volkman at the First Methodist
Church in Mason City. The couple lived in Nora Springs throughout their
marriage - celebrating their 50th and 53rd anniversaries with relatives and
friends at the Nora Springs Christian Church.
Ethel was a member of the Christian Church Disciples of Christ. She
previously was a member of the Lucky Dozen Club, Crescent Club and a Bible
study group. She organized a group of Girl Scouts in Nora Springs in 1940 -
the first one there.
After Arnold's death in April of 1991, she lived with her sister, Lorraine
Mitchell, in Mason City. They spent winters in Mesa, Ariz., until moving to
The Willows in June of 1997.
Surviving are her sister, Lorraine Mitchell, of Mason City; and three
brothers, William W. Lemke of Weyerhauser, Wis., Byrnes Lemke and his wife,
Stella, of Klemme and Laurice and his wife, Marjorie, of Klemme; 10 nieces
and nephews, William D. Lemke and his wife, Sien of Valhalla, N.Y., Bryant
Lemke, of Minneapolis, Bernard Lemke, of Charlotte, N.C., Brenda Megale, of
Houston, Texas, Linda Lindsay and her husband, Jay, of Rock Falls, Steven
Lemke and his wife, Jeannie, of Tucson, Ariz., Gwendelyn Suntken and her
husband, Byron, of Meservey, Paige Rohlf and her husband, David of Altoona,
Lynn Lemke and his wife, Valerie, of Olathe, Kan., and Michelle Greiman and
her husband, Stan, of Garner; 19 great-nieces and nephews; and three
great-great-nieces.
Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one sister, Helen
Sellner, of Milwaukee.
