Garner - Leon Lemke, 70, died Saturday (July 21, 1984) at his home in
Garner.
The son of Henry and Daisy (Greiman) Lemke, he was born Sept. 20, 1913 on
a farm near Klemme. He attended rural schools in Hancock County, and
public schools in Garner and Klemme.
During World War II, he served in the European Theater from 1942 to 1945.
He married LaVon Knoll on Jan. 15, 1946 in Garner, and they lived in
Garner all their married life.
Mr. Lemke worked at the Chevrolet-Oldsmobile dealership in Garner as a
mechanic for more than 45 years.
He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Garner, American Legion,
Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Fifth Armored Division Association.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St Boniface Catholic
Church, Garner, with Monsignor Roger O'Brien as celebrant.
Burial will be in the church cemetery, with military rites graveside by
the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit. Visitation is at the Cataldo
Funeral Chapel in Garner, where a Scripture wake service will be held at
7:30 tonight.
Mr. Lemke is survived by his wife, LaVon; a daughter, Mrs. Del (Renee)
Carolus, Apple Valley, Minn.; two sons, Gary, Longmont, Colo., and
Douglas, Garner; five grandsons; two sisters, Mrs. Vernon (Mildred)
McLaughlin Sr., Belmond, and Mrs. Rudy (Marjorie) Hefte, Britt, and two
brothers, Donald, Klemme, and Marvin, Des Moines.

Leon Lemke, 70
Services for Leon Lemke, 70, of Garner, who died Saturday at his home in
Garner, were held 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 24 at St. Boniface
Catholic Church in Garner with Rev. Msgr. Roger O'Brien as celebrant.
Mrs. Ronald Kumsher, organist, accompanied the church choir. Ushers were
Robert Kral and Elmer Urich.
Honorary bearers were grandsons Jamison Lemke, Benjamin Lemke, Darin Carolus,
Colin Carolus and Grant Carolus. Active bearers were Wayne Schlawin, Kenneth
Greiman, Clarke Pollock, Stan Ziesmer, Eldo Griffen and Kenneth Juhl. Burial
was in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Garner with graveside rites by the
Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.
Visitation and a scriptural Wake Service were held at the Cataldo Funeral
Chapel in Garner.
Leon Christian Lemke, the son of Henry and Daisy C. (Greiman) Lemke was born
Sept. 20, 1913 on a farm near Klemme. He was baptized and confirmed at Peace
Reformed Church south of Garner and later became a member of St. Boniface
Catholic Church in Garner. He attended the rural schools of Hancock County,
Garner Public School and Klemme Public School.
He grew up on a farm in the Klemme area where he also worked for various
farmers. Leon worked at the Chevrolet-Oldsmobile Dealership in Garner for
over 45 years as a mechanic. During WW II he served his country in the
European Theater from 1942-45.
Jan. 15, 1946, he married LaVon Knoll at St. Boniface Church in Garner. They
made their home in Garner their entire married life.
Leon had been in ill health since October of 1983 as the result of cancer.
He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, the American Legion the
Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Fifth Armoured Division
Association.
He is survived by his wife, LaVon, his children, Mrs. Del (Renee) Carolus of
Apple Valley, Minn.; Gary Lemke and his wife, Linda, of
Longmont, Colo., and Douglas Lemke of Garner; five grandsons; two sisters,
Mrs. Vernon (Mildred) McLaughlin Sr., Belmond, and Mrs. Rudy (Marjorie)
Hefte, Britt, and two brothers, Donald Lemke of Klemme, and Marvin G. Lemke
and his wife, Isabelle, of Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
