Harlan Ardell Meints, passed away on October 15, 2021 at his home on
Diamond Lake, Mn. after a paralyzing fall. A celebration of his life will
be held in the spring.
Harlan was born June 26th, 1943 to Herman and Lenora (Larson) Meints in
Belmond, Iowa. He attended the local country school, Liberty #7 and then
Klemme High School in 1961. He graduated from Northwest Missouri State in
1968 with a B.S. in education. Harlan was united in marriage to Sheryl
Kane in 1964 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Emmetsburg, Iowa. To this
union, they were blessed with 4 children, Juleen, Micheal, Steven, and
Angela.
Harlan taught high school sciences for 39 years in Iowa and Minnesota, 25
of these years at Charter Oak-Ute Community school. Harlan also coached
many sports, with girls’ track being his favorite. In 1989, he was named
the ‘Iowa Coach of the Year’.
Throughout his life, Harlan was lucky enough to travel the globe. He took
part in educational workshops through NASA three different times and at
the Kennedy Space Center he was a V.I.P for a night shuttle launch. Harlan
also participated in summer workshops at the Bronx’s Zoo: Seattle,
Washington: Boulder Colorado: oil wells in Oklahoma and lived in Fiji for
3 months. Harlan enjoyed playing, coaching and watching all sports,
especially those involving his children and grandchildren. He and Sherrie
would always look forward to their winters in Texas with their friends. He
always enjoyed reading, watching Jeopardy, solving crossword puzzles,
planning meals and having gatherings at their homes.
Harlan was proceeded in death by his parents, and his brothers Richard,
and Terry. He is survived by his wife, Sheryl, Juleen Meints of
Chicago Il., Micheal and Jimmy Williams of Phoenix AZ , Steve and Katie
Meints of Algona, IA. and Angela and Jeff Kohn of Ida Grove, IA. and 5
grandchildren Grace, Gavin, Grant, Gage, and Laura Meints (Ward) and
countless nieces, nephews, as well as many cousins and friends.
