Luella M Bonner Obituary

Luella Margaret Bonner, 92, of Clear Lake, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 310 First Ave. North, Clear Lake, with Pastor Adam Henaman officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will follow at Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme, Iowa.

Luella was born August 14, 1932, in Klemme, Iowa, the daughter of Albert and Leona (Buseman) Priebe. She graduated from Klemme High School in 1950 and went on to attend Hamilton Business College in Mason City. Following her education, she worked for the B.R. Dunn Law Office before becoming a telephone operator.

On October 11, 1952, Luella was united in marriage to Francis Ames, and the couple made their home in rural Rockwell. Together, they were blessed with five children. In 1954 they moved to Klemme and, a year later, to the home farm. Luella and Francis later parted ways in 1975.

Luella dedicated 20 years to the Hancock and Cerro Gordo County Department of Human Services, retiring in 1995. She also enjoyed working for the Surf Ballroom for many years, where she met countless friends.

On February 18, 1988, Luella married Jim Bonner. They made their home in Swaledale before retiring to Clear Lake in 1994. In retirement, Luella and Jim wintered in La Feria, Texas, at the VIP Park, where they made treasured memories with friends.

Luella enjoyed crafting, crocheting, birdwatching, and tending to her flower gardens. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and will be remembered for her lively spirit, quick wit, and feisty personality that brightened the lives of those around her. Luella was a volunteer at the Lime Creek Nature Center.

She is survived by her children, Mark (Carol) Ames, Nancy Nieman, Steve (Mary Jo) Ames, and Doug (Carol) Ames; grandchildren, Jeremy Ames, Jennifer (Jon) Holbach, Gregory Nieman, Tanya (Eric) Wolvers, Jenna (Nick) Wellik, Merrielle Hinz, and Cherilyn (Dustin) Hazelwood; great-grandchildren, Christian, Kayden, MacKenzie, Jack, Jed, Brenna, Ames, Sydney, Macie, Adrian, Jordan, Grace, and Bella; stepchildren, Jane (Dennis) Behr, Jamie Bonner, and Jodi (Doug) Klause; step-grandchildren, Jerrad Behr, Andrea Sauser, and Jennifer Behr; and five step-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, Ed Gaffney, Randy Gaffney, Scott, Beth and David Jaberg.

Luella was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jim Bonner; infant son, David Ames; infant granddaughter, Amy Nieman; stepson, Jack Bonner; step-grandson, Cory Behr; and sisters, Lucille (Dick) (Gaffney)and Miriam (Gene) Jaberg.


Visitation: Saturday, August 16, 2025, 9:30AM - 10:30AM, Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 310 1st Avenue North, Clear Lake, IA 50428

Service: Saturday, August 16, 2025, 10:30AM, Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 310 1st Avenue North, Clear Lake, IA 50428
