Irene Hartwig
Thornton - Irene Hartwig, 73, 205 Elm, Thornton, died Tuesday (Jan. 11,
1994) at North Iowa Mercy Center West, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul American
Lutheran Church, Thornton, with the Rev. Marlin Ingebertson officiating.
Burial will be in Meservey Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at Grarup Funeral Home,
Thornton.
Ruth Irene Hartwig was born Dec. 6, 1920, in Liberty Township, Hancock
County. She was the daughter of Howard L. and Alta Mae (Howard) Spitler. She
was baptized and confirmed at Liberty Township Methodist Church. She
graduated from Klemme High School in1938, continued her education at Iowa
State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and taught in a country school near
Kanawha.
Irene was united in marriage to George "Tom" Hartwig in 1941. They farmed
for many years south of Thornton until their retirement in 1980, when they
moved into Thornton.
Irene was an active member of St. Paul's American Lutheran Church in
Thornton, where she taught Sunday school for many years. Throughout her
life, Irene enjoyed gardening, especially wild flowers, sewing, traveling
and the love of her family.
Survivors include two sons, Mitchel and his wife, Rosalie, of Thornton, and
Max, of Naperville, Ill.; one daughter, Leilani Dannen and her husband,
Ronald, of Mason City; five grandchildren, Guy, of Lincoln, Neb., Angie and
her husband, Rick, of Belmond, Matthew, of Thornton, and Ryan and Kiley, of
Mason City; two great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Morgan, of Belmond; two
sisters, Doris Nicholson, of Clarion, and Edna Etzen, of Waterloo; and one
brother, Arthur Swomley, of Hudson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one brother and one
sister.
