Funeral Services Held Last Thursday For Albert Barz

Klemme Farmer Was Active In Community And Church Work

Funeral services were conducted at the Klemme Reformed Church last Thursday afternoon for Mr. Albert Barz, well known Klemme farmer and an active worker in community affairs.

Rev. Calvin Grosshuesch based his sermon on Joshua 23,14. Mrs. W. L. Thada and Mrs. A. H. Dulmes sang "Tell Mother I'll Be There," and "Safe In The Arms of Jesus."

Interment was made in the family lot at the Klemme Cemetery and Mr. Barz's five brothers, and Leslie Hartbeck carried him to his final resting place.

Albert Barz was born April 1st, 1887, at Klemme, Iowa. He was brought to holy baptism by his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. August Barz, in the Ell Town Reformed Church. During his boyhood days he attended the Klemme Public Schools, and the Bible and Confirmation Class of his church. He was confirmed with the class of 1902 by Rev. A. Muehlmeier.

As a youth he remained at home working on his father's farm. He was married to Miss Esther Hartbeck January 14, 1914. Had he lived until the coming January, the couple could have celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. The parents of Mr. Barz moved to Klemme in 1914, leaving Albert in charge of the home farm. Three children were born in this home and were reared in the fear and nurture of the Lord.

About five years ago Mr. Barz became ill, and when it was found that he had heart ailment, he discontinued strenuous work, rented the home farm, and built a new home and farm buildings on his adjoining 80. Since March, 1934, the family has lived in this new home.

Besides managing his farm, Mr. Barz took an active interest in community and church affairs. He was a director of the Klemme National Bank, of which institution he was elected vice president, when his father resigned from the office. He was elected to the school board about ten years ago and served faithfully until the time of his death. He was also director of the Farmers Oil Company and the Klemme Creamery. In each of these institutions his counsel and help will be greatly missed. He was not a man to seek honors, but rather a man whose opinion was respected, and whose help and counsel was sought. He served his church ably as Sunday School Supt. for a period of five years. As a member of the building committee he was elected treasurer of the building fund. He was a charter member of the Men's Chorus, and of the Mixed Choir and Chorus. He attended church and Sunday School with his family regularly.

He enjoyed a good reputation throughout our community. His many friends will remember him as a quiet, industrious man, honest and consistent in every respect. In every public office to which he was elected, he served humbly and faithfully.

Two years ago Mr. and Mrs. Barz enjoyed a trip to the Yellowstone Park, hoping that a short change might prove beneficial to his health. Last Sunday Mr. Barz was in his usual place in the church choir, spent the afternoon at home in pleasant conversation with his family, and in the evening he visited his old home place where Leslie Hartbeck family now resides. After arriving home he suffered a stroke at about 10:30 o'clock and twenty-four hours later, Monday evening, Nov 14th, 1938, he passed away. He died at the age of 51 years, 7 months and 13 days.

Surviving him and mourning his death are his wife; three children, Mrs. Edmond Josten, Milvern and Edward; five brothers, William of Garner, Herman, Henry, and Fred of Klemme; and Emil of Waterloo. Three sisters, Mrs. Henry C. Lau, and Mrs. Otto Baack, Tracy, Minn.; and Mrs. Lena Schroeder, Klemme.

Relatives from a distance who were in Klemme last Thursday to attend the funeral services of Mr. Albert Barz were: Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Palmby, Garden City, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Lau, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Lau and Otto Baack and family of Tracy, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. George VanTalge, Roy Holthaus, Clarence Hartbeck and Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Holthaus, Colesburg, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Cleo Ingle and son of Waukesha, Wis.; Raymond Barz of Plymouth, Wis.; and Fred Hartbeck of Epworth, Iowa.
