John N. Day

1880 - 1947

Services Held Friday For John N. Day

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock with Rev. Herschel E. Harvey, Pastor. officiating and with Rev. Calvin Grosshuesch, pastor of the Klemme Evangelical and Reformed Church assisting. Rev Grosshuesch read the following obituary:

John Nelson Day was born September 9, 1880 on a farm near Klemme, the son of R. M. and Dora Day. He grew to manhood and was educated in the Klemme school. He attended Morningside College at Sioux City and taught school in the Klemme vicinity before his marriage to Anna Mildred Smith on June 26, 1907. To this union was born one son, Dorance Smith Day.

Mr. Day was in business in Buffalo Center for four years before coming to Klemme where he operated a general store for over 25 years. He was active in Scout work, and for many tears was President of the Board of Education. He was a member of the Masonic Order, Modern Woodmen of America, Nat'l League of District Postmasters, Klemme Methodist Church, and was always ready and willing to help with any project that was for the betterment of the community.

In 1934 he was appointed Postmaster. The duties of this office were so confining and exacting during the war years that they brought on a paralytic stroke on May 28, 1946. Since then he was a partial invalid but enjoyed visiting with his many friends. He derived much pleasure from all the kindnesses which were bestowed on him. He was greatly sustained during this time by the constant care and devotion of his loving wife who did all in her power to make the days as pleasant as she could.

On Sunday August 17 he suffered a second severe stroke from which he failed to rally, and passed on the evening of August 19, 1947.

Surviving are his wife, Mildred; his son Dorance and his wife, Ruth; one grandson Gary, all of Mason City; one sister, Ida Baumgartner of Rock Falls; one brother, Stephan H. of Hubbard, Oregon and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a brother.

Members of the Bethel Lodge No. 619 took part in the services with the following Masons as casket bearers: Sumner Trumbell, Fred J. Arnold, Wm. H. Lemke, W. F. Pavey, Ed. Thompson and James Thomas. Mr. Day was a member of the Bethel Lodge.

Masonic burial rites were conducted at Memorial Park Cemetery near Mason City where Mr. Day was laid at rest in the family lot.

Out-of-town relatives and friends who attended the funeral of J. N. Day were as follows:
