Funeral services for Roy Grove were held Saturday, August 5, 1989, at
11:00 a.m. at the Garden City United Methodist Church in Monona. Rev. Gary
Dobbins officiated. Organist was Priscilla Miene and soloist was Carole
Gerdes. Burial was in the Monona City Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were
Jack Goltz, Don Wirkler, Harvey Landt, Elmer Radloff, George Smith, Bob
Jacobson, Vern Hupfer, and Marlyn Henderson. Active pallbearers were Ned
Fox, Larry Dawson, Wayne Landt, Lester Henderson, Andy Wold and Kermit
Klinge. Schultz's Funeral Home in Monona was in charge of services.
Roy Louis Grove was born March 11, 1910 near New Hampton, Iowa in
Chickasaw County, to parents Abner and Julia Schoenfeld Grove. He was
baptized in the Christian Republic Church, Republic, Iowa. He received his
education in the New Hampton Schools graduating from high school in 1928.
He attended Iowa State University in Ames and received a teaching
certificate.
On December 25, 1930 Roy was united in marriage to Marvelyn Alice Trusty
at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. To this union three children
were born. Roy taught school in Klemme and Stanley, Iowa. In 1940 he moved
to Monona where he owned and operated the Grove Feed Milland Hatchery
until 1987.
Roy died at his home Wednesday, August 2, 1989. He was a member of the
Brotherlove Masonic Lodge #204, Shriners, Monona Kiwanis and Garden City
United Methodist Church. He also served on the school board.
Preceding him in death were his parents, and three brothers, Charles,
Lynn, and Grant.
Surviving are his wife Marvelyn; one son and his wife, Dennis and Margaret
Grove of Harpers Ferry; two daughters and their husbands, Jacquelyn and
Alan Butterfield of Stillwater, Minn., and Judith and Gaylord Owlke of
Monona; 9 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Laurence
and Glen of New Hampton and Warren (Bill) of New Hartford, Ia.; one
sister, Hazel Hanley of Vancouver, Wash.
