Karen Marie Hanson

1937 - 2022

Karen Marie Hanson

Karen Marie Hanson was born in Binford, North Dakota, to Jule and Hank Hellekson on February 16, 1937.

In 1958, Karen received her bachelor’s, with a major in mathematics and a minor in Spanish at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. That
same year, she married Gerald “Bill” Hanson and began teaching. In 1971, she received her master’s degree in mathematics at San Jose
State.

In addition to teaching, Karen spent 16 years as a scientific programmer at Lockheed.

She volunteered with Camp Fire Girls, Bobby Sox Softball, Sunday school and women’s activities at Bethel Lutheran Church. She was also an avid bowler.

Karen’s faith sustained her in life and through the loss of the loved ones that preceded her, including her sister, Joann (Hellekson)
Grosskettler; her son, Eric Thor Hanson; and her son-in-law, Manuel Castro.

Her life is celebrated by her loving family: husband, Gerald “Bill” Hanson; daughters, Corrine Devine and Barbara Hanson Castro; her
daughter-in-law, Beth Elness-Hanson; granddaughters, Erin Devine (David Harbage), Megan Devine, Regina Castro, and Anya Hanson; as well as a myriad of extended family members and cherished friends.

A celebration of Karen’s Life will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church, 10181 Finch Ave, Cupertino, CA 95014 on Saturday August 20, 2022 at 1 pm.
