Virgie M. Andre, 93, of Fort Dodge, passed away Saturday, November 30,
2013, at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home in Fort Dodge. A Mass of
Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday, December 3, 2013, at
Corpus Christi Church with Father Msgr. Kevin McCoy officiating.
Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday at the Gunderson Funeral
Home and Cremation Services in Fort Dodge with a rosary at 7:30 PM
conducted by the Legion of Mary and the Catholic Daughters.
Virgie is survived by her daughter Kathy M. Wegman of Fort Dodge;
grandsons Dr. Peter (Ann) Gochee in Australia, Robert (Tammy) Gochee of
Surprise, AZ, and Andre Carroll, Des Moines, IA; granddaughters Samantha
(Matt) Frank in Fort IA, Shawndra Dievert and Jordana Andre both residing
in Phoenix, AZ, and Tabitha Wegman of Fort Dodge; seven
great-granddaughters, eight great- grandsons and one great great-great
granddaughter with another due to arrive in a few months.
Virgie is preceded in death by her husband, Guy Andre, daughter Michele J.
Andre, her parents Mr. and Mrs. Alvin (Rosie), two brothers Alvin Hardcopf,
Jr. and William Hardcopf, and a son-in-law Dale A. Wegman.
Virgie Margaret Hardcopf was born January 25, 1920 in LuVerne, IA.
Inspired by her aunt, Virgie attended what is now known as the University
of Northern Iowa and began her teaching career at age 16 in a small, one
room rural school.
On March 2, 1946, Virgie married Guy S. Andre and moved to Iowa City where
they had their two daughters, Michele and
Kathy. In 1957 the family moved to Fort Dodge where Virgie was a teacher
for over 30 years and resided until the time of her death.
Besides her love for education, Virgie loved to travel, traveling to many
foreign countries, playing bridge and became a Life Master, and did
countless hours of volunteer work with Retired Teachers of Iowa, AARP,
Habitat for Humanity, Catholic Daughters, Legion of Mary, and many other
organizations. Virgie was a member of the Legion of Mary and a Life time
member of the Catholic Daughters she was also a parishioner at Corpus
Christi.
Continuing with her love of education, Virgie has donated her body to the
Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota so she can help teach the next
generation of medical students. Virgie will be sadly missed by her family
and entire Fort Dodge community.
