- J. D. G. Houghton, Dead
Lived in Goodell Many years, Data furnished by Our Goodell Correspondent
Our community was again called to mourn the loss of one of our number in
the death of Mr. Houghton which occurred at his home at Goodell on
Thursday afternoon, September 25th, 1924, at 8:10 o'clock after a long
illness caused by the dread disease cancer. Mr. Houghton was born at
Rugby, England May 30, 1858. He was a graduate of Oxford.
In 1887 he went to Newfoundland where he was private tutor to two sons of
Sir Wm. Whiteway. While living at Newfoundland he was married to Rose
Goodridge. In 1893 they came to America and made their home for a time at
Eagle Lake from which place he came to this vicinity where he lived until
his death.
He was a man of splendid education and a great reader and student. He was
superintendent of the Goodell Schools for a number of years and taught in
the county until forced to inactivity by his illness. He was secretary of
the school board and town clerk for many years and will be much missed in
these capacities.
He suffered greatly, and although at times for days he was unable to
swallow a drop,, no word of complaint was ever heard from him. His family
during his illness did everything possible for his comfort.
He leaves eight children, Jack of Eden Prairie, and Joseph of Kanawha,
Mrs. Vida Conlan, Clement, Selwyn, Reginald, Daphne and Cholmondley all of
Goodell. While he was a great lover of home and family, he was long and
closely associated with affairs of town and school and his experience and
help will be much missed.
He was raised in the faith of the Church of England and later transferred
his membership to the Catholic Church in which faith he died. He was
buried from the Catholic Church at Goodell. Interment was in the Belmond
Cemetery.
