- Services held for Bertha Johnson, 93
Funeral services for Bertha I. Johnson, 93, were held at the Klemme United
Methodist Church on July 21. Officiating was Pastor Curtis DeVance.
Madelyn Priebe was the organist and Bev Thorson was the vocalist. She sang
"Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art." The ushers were Everett Guth and
Bob Scott.
The casket bearers were David Back, Clay Kilgore, Alvin Denny, Bob
Johnson, Harley Nuehring and John Schwichtenberg.
Interment was at Ell Township Cemetery.
Bertha Inger Johnson, the daughter of John A. and Hilma (Arvidson)
Johnson, was born on March 11, 1905, on a farm northeast of Klemme. She
graduated from Klemme High School. Bertha attended the Iowa State Teachers
College in Cedar Falls and graduated from Drake University in Des Moines.
She taught school for over 40 years, first in the country schools in the
community and then in the third grade in the Klemme Schools. Bertha was a
member of the United Methodist Church in Klemme.
Bertha loved spending time with children and was the family Santa. She was
a very giving and caring person to her family and friends.
She died on Saturday, July 18, , at the Concord Care Center in Garner.
Survivors include two sisters, Ethel Steffen of Waterloo and Doris Back of
Klemme; three nephews; four nieces; a brother, Don Carson; and a
sister-in-law, Minnie Johnson.
Preceding her in death were her parents; a brother, Harold Johnson; a
sister, Ruth Carson; and an infant brother.
The funeral arrangements were handled by the Tenold Funeral Home of
Klemme.
