- Bessie B. McKahan
Bessie Belva was born May 17, 1883 to Samuel and Sarah Jane McKahan in
Panora, Iowa and passed away April 24, 1984 at the Commonwealth Care
Center in Des Moines.
She attended school in Panora and graduated from Drake University. At the
age of 18 she was employed by the government to teach and help Mexicans to
obtain their citizenship.
For over 50 years she taught school in the Stuart-Menlo area.
While residing in Stuart most of her life, she enjoyed gardening, flowers
and was an accomplished artist.
Preceding her in death were her parents, brothers and sisters.
Surviving are two nieces, Sadie Brennan, of Des Moines, Iowa, and Dorothy
Campbell, of Chicago, Illinois; two nephews, Dr. John Rex Dixon, of
Brookfield, Missouri, and Harold Mitchell, of the Guthrie County Care
Facility, and several cousins.
Graveside services were held at Monteith Cemetery on April 27, 1984 with
the Rev. George Thurman officiating. Interment followed the funeral
service.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Monteith Cemetery north of
Stuart for Bessie B. McKahan, 100, of Commonwealth Care Center, 5608 S. W.
Ninth St., who died of a heart ailment Tuesday at the center.
Miss McKahan lived in Stuart most of her life and was a retired teacher in
the Stuart-Menlo area.
There are no immediate survivors. Friends may call today at Link Funeral
Home in Stuart.
