Ruth Eleanor Potter Drake

1915 - 1999

Ruth Drake

Cedar City - Ruth Eleanor Potter Drake, while holding the hands of her beloved family, took hold of the hand of Jesus and stepped from this earth into His arms the morning of Dec. 19, 1999.

Born to Orlo and Mamie Potter on Sept 15, 1915, she married her sweetheart, Ray Drake on Dec. 27, 1944, after awaiting his return from serving in World War II. [ Ray was a KHS graduate of the class of 1933 ]

Together they raised two wonderful children, Peggy and Lin, in Nashua, Iowa. Peggy is serving a lifetime mission as nurse and evangelist to the people of Burkino Faso, West Africa. Son Lin and his wife Debbie, settled in Cedar City, to raise their family. Five years ago, Ruth and Ray made their home in Cedar City to be near their children.

Ruth's life was a living testimony of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as she touched people in all walks of life - sharing love, prayers, and cookies with everyone she met. Loving and caring for children made teaching a natural career choice, and she taught in the Iowa public school system for 38 years. She started in a one-room school house and earned her bachelor's degree from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, while working full-time and raising her two
children.

One of her most enjoyable ministries was dressing like a clown and "playing" with the rest home residents and children, while sharing the gospel. All who have been touched by Ruth will feel the loss of her love and prayers, but rejoice for her, knowing she is at home at last. Home with her savior, her parents and her brothers Lloyd and Kenneth.

Family remaining include her husband: Ray; children: Peggy Drake, Lin and Debbie Drake; grandchildren: Travis Drake, Katie and Scott Jackson; and special "adopted" niece: Jetty Stouten from Holland.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Dec. 22, 1999, at Southern Utah Mortuary. Friends may stop by Tuesday evening from 6 to 8, or 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday prior to services.
