Dora Siemsen Partington died Nov. 3, 2000, at Moses Cone Hospital,
following surgery. A memorial service for Dora Partington will be held at
2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, at Friends Homes, Guilford.
She was born on April 17, 1910, in Ogallala, Neb., the daughter of
Freidrich Claus Siemsen and Dora Buck Siemsen. She was one of twelve
children of an immigrant homesteading family. Doras family later moved to
Iowa, where she graduated from high school and attended Iowa State
Teachers College (now Northern Iowa University). Later in her life she
earned an MA degree from Western Michigan University.
Dora had a long career in education in Iowa and then in the public schools
of Muskegon, Mich. She taught everything from Latin to second grade
reading with a love of her students and a love of learning. She ended her
career as assistant superintendent of elementary education in the Muskegon
Public Schools. She conveyed her enthusiasm and expertise in teaching to
scores of others.
She was married to Russel Partington for 61 years. They served together in
various capacities in Central Methodist Church of Muskegon. Together, they
were early members of the civil rights movement. They moved to Greensboro
in 1983. They joined New Garden Meeting (Society of Friends) and became
active supporters of Guilford College. Dora was a resident of Friends
Homes at Guilford.
