Clara Evelyn Smith

Funeral services for Clara Smith, 73, of Garner, who passed away at Concord Manor Nursing Home Oct. 17, were held Oct. 21 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Garner. Pastor R. W. Uecker officiated. Burial was in St. Olaf Cemetery West of Belmond. The Andrew Funeral Home of Klemme was in charge of arrangements.

Clara Evelyn Johnson was born May 19, 1901 to Lewis and Harrietta Farason Johnson in the St. Olaf community of Wright county. Here she was raised, attended rural schools and graduated from Goodell High School. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and taught in several Iowa schools. In 1923 she was married to Burton Smith, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Smith retired from teaching in 1965 and built a home in Forest City where she was assistant librarian for four years. She moved to Belmond in 1969 and in 1971 moved to Prairie View Apartments in Garner. In The fall of 1973 she entered Concord Manor Nursing Home and had since been in failing health.

Mrs. Smith was confirmed in St. Olaf Lutheran Church and was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Garner.

Survivors include three sisters; Mabel Osmund of Waseca, Minn.; Alma Morstad of Hartland, Minn.; and Mrs. Harry (Nettie) Trumbell of Klemme.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
