Manly - Mary Adelaide Smith, 87, of Manly, died Tuesday (Dec. 10, 2002) at
The Good Shepherd Health Care Center in Mason City.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Sacred Heart
Catholic Church in Manly with the Rev. David Kucera officiating. Burial
will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.
According to her wishes, there will be no visitation. Bride Colonial
Chapel in Manly is in charge of arrangements.
Mary Adelaide Smith was born on Sept. 3, 1915, in rural Manly, the
daughter of George and Amy (Ryan) Smith.
She attended rural country schools in Union Township No. 4, rural Manly,
and graduated from Holy Family Catholic High School in 1932. Mary also
graduated from Mason City Junior College in 1934. After graduating from
college, she taught school for a short time before going to Iowa State
Teachers College in Cedar Falls.
After graduating from Iowa State Teachers College, she taught school in
Waverly, Klemme and Hamilton Business College in Mason City.
Mary retired from teaching to take care of her mother.
Mary lived on the family farm until 2001 before moving to The Manor in
Mason City and had been a resident of Good Shepherd in Mason City for only
two weeks.
She enjoyed knitting, crossword puzzles, traveling to Ireland, gardening,
watching the Minnesota Twins baseball and Viking football teams, and the
Iowa Hawkeyes.
She was a member of Sacred heart Catholic Church in Manly.
Left to cherish her memory are her two brothers, G. Bernard Smith of Mason
City and Robert Smith and his wife, Norma, of Mason City; numerous nieces
and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Monica O'Keefe and
Veronica Thom, and two brothers, John and Gerald Smith
