John Joseph Suckow

1869 - 1903

 

John Joseph Suckow was born in Elkport, Clayton Co., Iowa, June 26, 1869, and died in Garner on July 5, 1903. When about 9 years of age he moved with his parents to Hancock Co., where he continued to make his home until death.

He was always a thoughtful studious boy, and made the most of such educational advantages as were afforded him. In addition to the common schools, he received a thorough course of training in the Garner Commercial College under Prof. Pollock, after which he became a teacher in the public schools of the county. He held the principal ship of the Klemme schools for four years. When the state of his health rendered teaching impossible, he did such other work as he could get.

On June 24, 1896, he was united in matrimony to Miss Mary E. Good, of Unionville, Iowa. Last November he felt the first approaches of the insidious disease of consumption, which, after causing much suffering, ended in death. But he was patient through it all, and when he found his case to be beyond the reach of human skill, he resigned himself to the hands of God and passed into the valley of shadows with the fortitude of a Christian.

He was a Christian since early youth, and, at the time of his death, a member of the M. E. church of Garner. His life was simple, thoughtful, and unostentatious, and in keeping with his profession; his character as son, brother, husband, and citizen is worthy of the imitation of all who have known and loved him.

For the first time in many years this family circle is broken by death. His aged parents, four brothers and one sister together with his wife and two children survive him, and look to a reunion beyond the grave.

Funeral service was held in the Garner M. E. church, Tuesday p.m. and burial in the German township cemetery.
