Allison - Mavis J. Whitmire, 83, of Allison, formerly of Grundy Center and
Fort Madison, died Saturday, Sept. 23, at Allison Health Care Center of
natural causes.
She was born Nov. 27, 1922, in Marshalltown, daughter of Charlie Franklin
and Faeh Viola Rhinesmith Whitmire. She graduated from Grundy Center High
School in 1940, then attended Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls,
for two years. She taught in rural schools in Grundy and Tama counties
from 1942 to 1946, then taught primary grades at Halfa from 1946 to 1949.
She completed her bachelor's degree at the University of Northern Iowa,
Cedar Falls, in 1952, then taught high school in Kensett, Celsea,
Dunkerton, Klemme and Williamsburg. In 1965, she received her master's
degree from the University of Denver. She served as school librarian at
Fort Madison High School and junior high schools from 1964 until retiring
in 1985.
Survivors include two brothers, Gerald C. Whitmire of Parkersburg and
Merle R. (Delilah) Whitmire of Wellsburg.
Services at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, Grundy
Center, with burial in Fifteen Mile Cemetery (Lincoln Township Cemetery),
Tama County. Public visitation 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
