Lois Ann Avery (Hafermann)

Thornton - Lois Ann Hafermann, 86, of Rockwell, formerly of Thornton, passed away Saturday, December 27, 2014, at Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Sacred Heart Church in Rockwell with Fr. Rod Allers presiding. Interment will be in the Meservey Cemetery.

Lois Ann Hafermann was born December 25, 1928, in Hampton, Iowa, a daughter of Anson Emmett and Ethel (O’Rourke) Avery. She graduated from Klemme High School and attended Drake University for 1 year, receiving secretarial training. She then worked for a Civil Engineering firm in Garner until her marriage.

On November 28, 1953, Lois was united in marriage with Daryl Elmer Hafermann at St. Francis Xavier Church in Belmond. They made their home on his family farm near Thornton and raised their three children.

Family was very important to Lois and she kept the family centered on her faith and church. Family meal time was always kept and the daily prayers as a family. She home-schooled her children in the Catechism and developed prayerful habits that her children still practice today.

Lois lived on a farm her entire life and had a fondness for horses. Besides raising them, she also showed them in various horse shows. With Daryl, in their first few years of married life, they milked cows, along with raising row crops. The remaining years were spent raising row crops, and continued enjoyment of bowling on mixed leagues, with Daryl. She had a large garden and canned and froze her produce every year. She was also known for baking, especially her loaves of homemade bread that went so well with her homemade jams and jelly's.

An avid bowler, she also was in several leagues and numerous state tournaments. Also, many fond memories were made with her family at times they bowled together.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Sherri (Ron) Barnes, Rockford, David Hafermann, Thornton, Scott (Jo) Hafermann, Goodell; grandchildren: Melanie (Joe) Worley, Luke (Eun Jung) Dickerson, Jason Dickerson, Lyndsay (Rick) Dow, Caitlin Barnes, Jeffrey Hafermann, Samantha Hafermann; great grandchildren: Anson Dickerson and Bennett Dow.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Daryl in 2010; grandson Matthew Hafermann; and granddaughter Sarah Marie Hafermann.
