Esther Mae Mayland

1950 - 2000

 

Esther Mae Shannon, 49, of Alta, passed away Sat., Aug. 19, 2000 at the Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake following a battle with cancer.

Funeral services were held Wed., Aug. 23 at 2 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Britt with Rev. Dr. William Breen, interim Pastor, officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Donna Tech accompanying vocalist Marlene Smith in "You'll Never Walk Alone" and "Just a Closer Walk Alone."

Casketbearers were Larry Folkerts, Steve Haugan, Roger Muth, Tom Haraldson, David Meyer, David Zeigler. Ushers were Donald Dallman and Paul Smith.

Interment was at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Esther, the daughter of Walbert and Caroline (Meyer) Mayland, was born in Britt on Aug. 25, 1950. She attended country school near Klemme and later moved near Britt where she continued her education. Esther graduated from Britt High School with the class of 1968.

She was employed at the Britt Milk Plant and was a clerk at the Eagle Grove Sale Barn for 15 years. She later was employed at Faith, Hope and Charity, home for Children in Storm Lake and at Avon's Restaurant in Alta.

Esther was united in marriage with Robert Shannon on Sept. 23, 1995, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hanover. She and her husband enjoyed going to sale barns and raising horses.

She was a lifetime member of the First Lutheran Church in Britt.

Esther is survived by her husband, Robert of Alta; three children, Rob Pigman of Britt, Shiela Michelson and her husband, Dean, and their children Anthony, James and Kyle, of Kanawha, and Al Zeigler and his daughter, Mckenzie, of Britt; her parents, Walbert Sr. and Caroline Mayland of Britt; two step-children, Michael and his daughter, Laci, of Storm Lake and Wendy Ellingson, and her husband, Derek, and their sons, Zack, David, and Roman, of Newell; one sister, June Asche and her husband, Eldon, of Kanawha; two brothers, Walbert Mayland, Jr. and his wife, Gloria, and Stanley Mayland, all of Britt; mother-in-law, Laura Mae Shannon of Storm Lake; sister-in-law, Susan Shannon-Graves of Storm Lake, brothers-in-law, Paul Shannon and his wife, Ina, of Alta and David Shannon and his wife, Carolyn, of Storm Lake; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Ella and Carol Ann Mayland, an infant sister; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Meyer and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Mayland; and her father-in-law, Harold Shannon.

Former Britt resident, Esther Mae Shannon of Alta, Iowa died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000 at the Buena Vista Hospital in Storm Lake, following a battle with cancer. She was 49.

Funeral services for Mrs. Shannon were held Wednesday, Aug. 23 at First Lutheran Church in Britt. The Rev. Dr. William Breen, interim pastor, officiated. Music was provided by Mrs. Donna Rech, who accompanied soloist Mariene Smith. Ushers were Donald Dallman and Paul Smith.

Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Britt. The Ewing Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Esther (Mayland) Shannon was born Aug. 25, 1950 in Britt. She was the daughter of Walbert and Caroline (Meyer) Mayland. She attended school at Klemme and later moved near Britt where she continued her education. She was a 1968 graduate of Britt High School.

She was employed at the Britt Milk Plant and was a clerk at the Eagle Grove Sale Barn for 15 years. She later was employed at Faith, Hope and Charity Home for Children in Storm Lake and at Avon's Restaurant in Alta.

On Sept. 23, 1995, she was united in marriage to Robert Shannon at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hanover. The couple enjoyed going to sale barns and raising horses.

Mrs. Shannon was a lifetime member of Faith Lutheran Church,Britt.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Shannon of Alta; three children: Rob Pigman of Britt, Shiela Michelson and her husband, Dean, and their three children Anthony, James and Kyle, of Kanawha, Al Zeigler and his daughter, Mckenzie, of Britt; her parents, Walbert Sr. and Caroline Mayland of Britt; two step children, Michael Shannon and his daughter, Laci, of Storm Lake, and Wendy Ellingson and her husband, Derek, and their sons, Zack, David, and Roman of Newell. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday August 23, 2000 at First Lutheran Church in Britt with the Reverend Dr. William Breen officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Britt. A memorial fund has been established.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2000 at 10 a.m. at St John Lutheran Church in Hanover with the Reverend Mark Abraham officiating.

Esther Mae Mayland was born August 25, 1959 in Britt, the daughter of Walbert Mayland Sr. and Caroline Meyer Mayland. She graduated from Britt High School. On September 23, 1995 she married Robert J. Shannon at St. John Lutheran Church in Hanover.

Esther worked at Mrs. Mom's Restaurant and Faith Hope and Charity in Storm Lake and at Avon's Restaurant in Alta.

She and her husband raised quarter and paint horses and were members of the American Quarter Horse Association and the American Paint Horse Association. Esther enjoyed growing flowers and caring for her cats.

Surviving are her husband Robert, Alta; her parents Walbert and Caroline Mayland, Britt; two sons: Rob Pigman and Allan Ziegler, Britt; a daughter Sheila Michelson and her husband Dean, Kanawha; two step-children; Michael Shannon, Storm Lake and Wendy Ellingson and her husband Derek, Newell; two brothers: Walbert Mayland Jr. and his wife Gloria and Stan Mayland, Britt and a sister, June Asche and her husband Eldon, Kanawha.

Also surviving are 4 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; her mother-in-law Laura Mae Shannon, Storm Lake; brothers-in-law David Shannon and his wife Carolyn, Storm Lake and Paul Shannon and his wife Ina Rae, Alta; a sister-in-law Susan Shannon-Graves, Storm Lake and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Esther was preceded in death by her grandparents, two sisters, Mary Ella and Carol Ann Mayland, an infant sister, and by her father-in-lay Harold Shannon.
