Thomas Earl Shoop

1935 - 1952

Thomas Earl Shoop

On Sunday, June 15,1952, just after dinner, four young men went for a swim in the gravel pit on the William F. Greiman farm in Twin Lake Township, southwest of Klemme. They were Douglas and Thomas Shoop and Calvin and Marvin Sandrey.

Because of the recent heavy rains, the water was deeper than usual, and Thomas Shoop got into the deep water, went down and failed to come up. His companions tried to reach him but failed. none were experienced swimmers.

They called to a passing motorist for help, who drove to the Wm. Lacey farm and used the phone to summon help from town.

A number of men from Klemme hastened to the trouble spot. Included were Dr. Dulmes, "Pete" Kilgore, Charles Whitford, Claude White, Fred J. Arnold, Bert Jones, Wallace Green and others. Dr. Ruska and a life saving squad from the Belmond Fire Company also arrived. Later Sheriff L. M. Brouwer and Lloyd Anderson from Garner and Coroner Boughton from Britt and the ambulance arrived.

It was an hour and a half that the young man lay under the water seven feet deep. When retreieved the doctors and helpers used the pulmotor and other means, but the victim failed to revive.

And thus, the life story of Thomas Earl Shoop came to an untimely end.

He was born November 21, 1935 in Maywood, California, the second of four children born into the home of Sibert E. and Rose Howard Shoop.

The family moved to Clear Lake in 1938, and the for a half dozen years they lived in Central Heights, Mason City. Since 1947 the family has lived near Klemme on the Dr. D. P. Anderson farm.

Thomas was a pleasant young man; had a smile for everyone. He will be missed at the fireside of the Sibert Shoop home; he will be missed by the Freshman class of the Klemme high school; and will be missed by his classmates and teachers in the Klemme Methodist Sunday school.

He reached the age of 16 years, 6 months and 24 days, and leaves besides his parents, one brother and two sisters: Douglas, Blanche and Barbara, all at home.

Three grandparents: Mr. and Mrs. Claude Shoop, and Mrs. Minnie Howard, all of Clear Lake. Four aunts, Ardella Yule, Mason City; Mrs. Orton Olson, Wisconsin; Mrs. Ralph Ott, Clear Lake; and Mrs. J. L. Duncan, Clear Lake. Four uncles: Harold Shoop, Klemme; Cecil and Harry Shoop, Clear Lake; and Ray Howard, Wisconsin, and other more distance relatives and friends.

Tommy Shoop, 16, Drowns In A Pit

Goodell - Thomas E. (Tommy) Shoop, age 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Seibert Shoop, drowned Sunday afternoon in the Greiman gravel pit. Tommy, a farm youth, was swimming with three or four other boys in the pit located three miles south and one mile west of Klemme. The pit had about ten feet of water in it in places.

According to a report from Tommy's brother, Tommy had jumped into the pit, and immediately had difficulty in swimming; then went down in six feet of water. Tommy's brother and a companion failed in rescue attempts. It was an hour before the body was recovered from the pit.

The Fire department of Belmond was called and used a respirator for one and one-half to two hours before all hope was given up. A doctor of the Steele Memorial hospital was there, too. Coroner Kenneth Boughton pronounced death was due to accidental drowning.

Tommy was a senior in the Klemme high school. Funeral services had not been completed at the writing of this tragedy. A funeral home of Klemme is in charge of the services; they were called about three o'clock to take care of the body.
