Doris June Nicholson

August 13, 1926 - December 23, 2018

Doris June (Spitler) Nicholson, 92, of Wake Forest, formerly of Iowa, died Sunday, December 23, 2018, under Hospice care in her daughter’s home. She was born on August 13, 1926, in Klemme, Iowa, to Howard and Alta (Howard) Spitler, their third daughter. She graduated from Klemme High School, Class of 1944. She married Lee Floy on October 13, 1946, and they had two daughters. They divorced in 1968. She later married Eugene Nicholson on July 1, 1972.

She was a homemaker who loved her family dearly. She loved to cook, bake bread and pies; and sew clothes for her daughters; polka dance, play her accordion; and play Hexagrams. She was very pleased to bake communion bread for her church family. She loved to garden, having a green thumb. And she loved the color purple. She lived in Thornton, Hampton, Forest City, Clear Lake, Clarion and Grinnell, Iowa, before moving to Wake Forest, NC, in 2005.

She was a much-loved member of Christ Our Hope PCA Church in Wake Forest.

Ms. Nicholson is survived by her two daughters, Liana (Mrs. C. Michael) Anderson of Wake Forest, NC, and Mary (Mrs. Rodney) Locke, of Glenwood, IA; three grandchildren, Jason Locke of Glenwood, IA, Megan (Mrs. Daniel) Vasko of Louisburg, NC, Jay Locke of Lincoln, NE, and granddaughter-in-law Andrea (Mrs. S. Patrick) Pridgen of Kansas City, MO; ten great grandchildren, Daniel (Mrs. Tori) Anderson, Codi Wallace, Michael Wallace, Erik Anderson, Cali Wallace, Darius Vasko, Savannah Locke, Cassandra Locke, Caitlin Locke and Jayden Locke; five great-great grandchildren, Luke Collins, Ashlyn Anderson, Xander Anderson, Aaliyah and Jacey Kelley; and three step-children, Gloria Miner (Mrs. Ken) Miner of Grinnell, IA, Gail Wallace, Greg Nicholson, and six step-grandchildren, nineteen step-great grandchildren, and two step-great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Irene (Spitler) Hartwig and Edna (Spitler) Etzen, and foster brother Arthur Swomley; husband, Eugene, a grandson, Brian Anderson, two great grandsons, Bradley Wallace and Christopher Anderson, a great-great granddaughter, Abbigail Locke, a step-son, Gary Nicholson, and a step-great granddaughter, Makayla Hutchcraft.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019, at Christ Our Hope Church, 203 Capcom Avenue, #107, Wake Forest, NC, with the Reverend Gabriel Sylvia officiating and the Reverend Timothy Sharpe assisting. Visitation with the family will be from 9:45-10:15 a.m., the Memorial Service from 10:30-11:30 a.m., and a reception following in Hope Hall at 11:45 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Christ Our Hope Presbyterian Church in America.
