Services for Dora H. Lawhorn, 85, who died Wednesday, July 26, 1995 at Long Beach, CA. Community Hospital were held Wednesday, Aug. 2, 10:30 a.m., at the Church of Our Fathers with Pastor Paul Estebo officiating.

Casket bearers were Richard Gilbert, Gregory Cometa, Len Tomei, Dennis Morrison, Henry Dodson and Al Dias.

Burial was at Forest Lawn, Cypress, CA.

Dora Helen Lawhorn, the daughter of Oscar and Anna (Dahlgren) Swanson who had immigrated from Sweden, was born March 16, 1910 in Morris IL. At an early age, she and her family of 10 brothers and sisters settled on a farm near Klemme. Dora graduated from Klemme High School in 1926 and attended Iowa State Teachers College and North Iowa Community College.

In 1934, she married Francis Burdette Lawhorn of Garner where they raised two daughters. She taught in elementary schools in rural Iowa and Lynwood, CA. after the family moved there in 1954. She received a BA from Whittier College in Whittier, CA. in 1961. In 1975, she retired from teaching.

Dora lived in Long Beach for 20 years and actively supported many Christian and patriotic causes. She loved to tend to her California flower garden, but she never forgot her Iowa roots and cherished all contact with family and friends from "home".

She is survived by two daughters, Sonyalea Crammer of Minneapolis, MN., and Suzanne Cometa of Lakewood, CA; grandchildren, Richard Gilbert and Lisa Guest of Minneapolis, Daniel Gilbert of Miami, FL., Gregory Cometa of Las Vegas, NV, and Steve Cometa of Lakewood, CA.; great-grandson, Steven David Cometa; and three sisters, Ethel Haynes of Hemet, CA., Edith Lemke, Seal Beach, CA>, and Phyllis Loeffler of Inverness, FL.
