A memorial service for Bernice L. Tanner, 86, of Arvada, Co, formerly of the Klemme and Goodell area, who died Monday, June 7, 1993, was held Wednesday, June 16 at the chapel in Springwood Retirement Home in Arvada.

Her body was cremated and at her request, her ashes will be scattered at a later date in the mountains on land owned by her niece and her husband.

Bernice Tanner, daughter of John and Rose Schaper Tanner, was born September 28, 1906 in rural Goodell where she lived with her parents. She received her education in the rural schools of Hancock County. She graduated from Klemme High School with the class of 1924. She was a graduate of Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and San Jose State College, California. She taught school in Twin Lake and Liberty Township, Crystal Lake and Klemme.

In 1947, Bernice and her sister, Frances moved from the Klemme area to Apos, CA, where she continued to teach another 20 years for a total of 31 years in the teaching profession. She was a dedicated teacher and was interested in preserving the forests and environment.

She was an active member of the Methodist Church, of the Retired Teachers Association and the Sierra Club.

She is survived by her sister, Frances; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Clarence, Luther and Robert; and one sister, Florence (Mrs. Ernest Kalkwarf).

Bernice L. Tanner, 86, of Arvada, Colorado died June 7, 1993 in Lutheran Medical Center. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 16, in Springwood Retirement Home Chapel. The body was cremated.

Ms. Tanner was born in Goodell, Iowa. She was an elementary school teacher prior to her retirement. Ms. Tanner is survived by her sister, Frances of Arvada.
