Florence L. Kalkwarf

1915 - 1975

Drowning Investigated

Belmond - Authorities are still investigating the drowning death of Mrs. Ernest (Florence) Kalkwarf, 59, rural Belmond, whose body was retrieved from the swollen Iowa River three miles south of Belmond Wednesday.

Rescue teams from Belmond and surrounding communities recovered Mrs. Kalkwarf's body in deep water about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, and Wright County Medical Examiner Dr. Dale Harding ordered an autopsy. A pathologist at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Mason City, ruled the cause of death as drowning.

According the Belmond police, the river was "pretty high" at the point where Mrs. Kalkwarf was found. She was apparently alone when the accident occurred. Wright County Sheriff's officers and Iowa Bureau of Criminal Investigation agents are joining in the investigation.

Funeral services for Mrs. Kalkwarf will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church, Belmond, with Pastors Conrad Harris and Rolland Hostager officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.

Mrs. Kalkwarf and her husband farmed east of Belmond in Hancock County. Visitation is at the Andrew Funeral Home, Belmond. She is survived by her husband, Ernest; three daughters, Mrs. Larry (Janis) Hase, Avada, Colo.; Mrs. Dean (Miriam) Pals, Belmond; and Mrs. Jim (Adrianne) Pasquariell, Belmond; three sons, Paul, Evergreen, Colo,; Merrill, Houston, Tex.; and Neil, Belmond; eight grandchildren; and two sisters, Bernice and Frances Tanner, Aptos, Calif.
