Obituary

Fred A. Arnold was born October 4, 1874 on a farm in Clayton County, Iowa, about 8 miles west of McGregor. He was the second of six children born to his parents, Frederick Arnold and Mary Renziehausen Arnold.

He attended the German Methodist Church at Giard, Iowa, and became a member by confirmation. He attended the Giard school, the high school at Farmersburg and then took a commercial course at the Charles City College, and completed his business training at La Cross, Wisconsin.

In 1894, when Fred was 20, the Arnold family sold their land in Clayton county and bought some prairie land in Avery township near Klemme, Iowa.

In 1895 Fred Arnold began working in the First National Bank in Klemme as a bookkeeper and has been active in this bank for over a half century, and at the time of his death was its president.

On November 26, 1902, at the age of 28, Fred A. Arnold and Clarice Gibbs were married at the home of the bride's parents and they commenced housekeeping in Klemme and have continued as residents through all of their 47 years of married life. They are the parents of two sons.

Mr. Arnold was always interested in our schools and was a member of the Klemme School Board for 15 years, serving most of that time as president. He was also interested in town affairs and served several terms as councilman.

All of the business and professional people who were active on Klemme's Main Street in 1895, when Mr. Arnold started, have passed on and are replaced by younger men. And now, Mr. Arnold, Klemme's senior businessman, after spending a few weeks in a hospital, also received the call to leave us, and the end came Monday morning, January 16, 1950. He reached the age of 75 years, 3 months and 12 days.

He leaves besides his wife, two sons: Fred J. and Asa R.; four grandchildren: Fred Robert, Clarice Ann, Marilyn and Rosalyn; two sisters: Mrs. Ella Schneider, Klemme, Iowa, and Mrs. Amanda Tice, Mason City, Iowa; one brother, Elmer J. Arnold, Klemme, Iowa and many more distant relatives and friends.
