Donald R. Dremmel

Donald R. Dremmel, 85, of Dubuque, died Thursday, February 21, 2013 at Luther Manor, Dubuque. Funeral services will be 1 pm Wednesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church where friends may call Wednesday from 11 am to 1 pm. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Donald was born August 10, 1927 in Burt, Iowa, son of Ray and Ethel (Sperry) Dremmel. He graduated from Burt High School and completed his BA in English at the University of Dubuque in 1950. Donald served in the U.S. Army, 1945-1946, as an installer repairman stationed in Alaska. In 1949 he married Corrine Kern. She preceded him in death in 2011.

Donald was a teacher in the Dubuque Community Schools for 38 years, until his retirement in 1989. He taught English at Jefferson Jr. High, and then Washington Jr. High for 25 years. His students remember his way of teaching with wit and humor, and his love of language and literature. Donald worked with student teachers, and also mentored Eagle Scouts. He was known as a radio enthusiast, and tinkered with ham radios for many years.

After his retirement, Donald mentored English language learners and received a Governor’s award for his volunteer work. He especially enjoyed trout fishing with his wife Corrine, travel including trips to Germany and the UK, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was also a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by four children, Amy (Roy) Kelsey of San Jose, California, Van (Linda Bowe) Dremmel of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, Mark (Sandy) Dremmel of Dubuque, and Nell (John) Blankfort of La Jolla, California and 6 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Marlene (Len) Stenzel and Barbara (Duane) Dittmer of Burt, Iowa, Charlotte (Bert) Baldwin of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Marsha (Jack) Cerizo of Omaha, Nebraska.

Funeral services will be 1 pm Wednesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church where friends may call Wednesday from 11 am to 1 pm. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.
