Donald LaVerne Hunter

Obituary Of D. L. Hunter

Donald LaVerne Hunter was born November 18, 1904, Willow Township, Charter Oak, Iowa, and died on May 17, 1950, at the age of 45 years, 5 months and 29 days.

He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Hunter.

The Charter Oak community has been Donald's home except for nine years in which he was a teacher in the Iowa Public School system. Four years were spent at Varina and five years at Klemme as superintendent. He returned to Charter Oak and the home farm in 1936 where he has since lived.

His education was accomplished through the country and Independent Public Schools of Willow Township and Charter Oak Grade and High Schools. He graduated from the Charter Oak High School with the class of 1923. He then entered Morningside College and graduated with the class of 1937. Additional training was secured by attending Summer School sessions at Morningside and Buena Vista Colleges and at Iowa City.

Donald was a member of The Methodist Church in Charter Oak. His membership had been at Klemme, Iowa, and was very active in Sunday School and Men's work in Varina and Klemme, and supported our church in Charter Oak throughout the remainder of his life.

He married Martha Marie Neubaum on September 1, 1926. To this union were born Gail LeRoy, Delores Marie, Don LaVerne, Darlene Dora, and Dean Edward. Gail LeRoy and Darlene Dora preceded their father in death.

He leave to mourn his death his wife, Martha Marie, his daughter, Delores Marie, two sons; Don LaVerne and Dean Edward; his mother, Mrs. Nina Hunter, all of Charter Oak; two uncles, Ed Rees of New York and Worden Rees of Alberta Canada, two aunts; Mrs. Ella Cue of Gordon, Nebraska and Mrs. Bernice Peters of Omaha, Nebraska, four sisters-in-law, Mrs. Otto Meyer of Ricketts, Mrs. Mahela Spiegel of Denison, Hilda Hennings, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Mrs. Floyd McCabe of Brandentown, Florida, besides a number of cousins, nephews and nieces, neighbors and friends.

The Methodist Church and all the friends of the family join in extending to you who this day mourn, our deepest and sincerest sympathy and pray that our common Heavenly Father may give you the necessary courage and faith and love to carry on worthily in the name of Our Lord Christ.

Funeral services were conducted from the Nina Hunter home and The Methodist Church Friday afternoon the 19 at two o'clock by Reverend O. M. Squires, the pastor and the Reverend George Scheider of Galva, pastor of The Methodist Church there and formerly the pastor at Charter Oak.

Pall Bearers were Alfred Mitchell, Henry Meeves, Elmer Schwingdorf, Clarence Weiss, LaVerne Brummer and Atnset Nelson.

Burial was made in the Charter Oak Cemetery under the direction of the Byers Funeral Home of Mapleton.
