Edwin F. Jacobs Funeral Held At E. & R. Church

Last Rites Monday Afternoon For Retired Business Man

Was Prominent Hardware Dealer In Klemme For Twenty-Eight Years

Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon from the Klemme Evangelical and Reformed Church for Edwin F. Jacobs, 55, with the Rev. Vernon Jaberg officiating.

Mr. Jacobs died at a Mason City Hospital Thursday, October, 4th, following a long illness. Edwin Jacobs was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Jacobs and was born in Jackson county, Iowa, near Maquoketa on August 4, 1896. As a youth he attended the schools of his community and later when the family moved to Garner, he attended thee schools there.

After serving in World War One, Mr. Jacobs was employed by various Garner firms until August 14, 1919 when he came to Klemme and purchased the Gruetzmacher Bros. hardware store and was a prominent business man in North Iowa for twenty-eight years, When he was forced to abandon his business career because of poor health.

The first store burned down and was replaces by a large double-front brick building. This was again later destroyed and Jacobs erected the building now housed by the hardware store which he sold to Fuss and Schuster in 1947.

Jacobs had been a director of The National Hardware Association and was affiliated with the Iowa Retail Hardware Association for many years.

He was a member of the Klemme Evangelical and Reformed Church, the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star Chapter of Garner, the Consistory and the Shrine.

On April 25, 1922, Edwin F. Jacobs and Myrtle G. Wistey of Clear Lake were married. To this union were born two sons, Elwyn and Dean, and a daughter, Lois who survive. He also leaves his mother, Mrs. Chris Jacobs of Garner, and one sister, Mrs. Charles (Ethel) Papousek of Clear Lake.

Interment was in the Memorial Park Cemetery west of Mason City. Mr. Jacobs was carried to his final resting place by close friends: C. G. Waterman, George Lawhorn, Sumner Trumbell and Arthur Kudje of Klemme and Leo Esbeck and Bob Gisel of Ventura. The Masonic Lodge of Garner conducted services at the grave.
