George L. Lawhorn

1895 - 1975

Services held for George L. Lawhorn

Klemme - Funeral services for George L. Lawhorn, 79, who died Sunday morning, March 23, at St. Joseph Hospital in Mason City, were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, in the Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme. The Rev. Marvin Lehmann officiated. Burial was in the Klemme Cemetery with the Andrew Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

George Lewis Lawhorn was born December 10, 1895, in Lena, Illinois, and died March 23, 1975, at the age of 79 years, 3 months, and 13 days. He was the son of Horace and Lulu (Bateman) Lawhorn. The family came to a farm northeast of Klemme when George was a young child. He attended rural schools and grew to manhood in that area.

In 1918, he entered the United States Army and served in the Medical Corps during World War I. After he finished his military service he returned to Klemme and began a career of painting and sanding.

On May 10, 1934, he was united in marriage to Viola Freie in the Reformed church in Klemme.

In 1942, he was forced to discontinue his painting and sanding because of a heart condition and became the custodian for Klemme Schools. Because of ill health, he was forced to retire in 1968. During his tenure at the Klemme Schools he gained the respect and love of the students and of those with whom he worked.

Mr. Lawhorn managed one of the town baseball teams. He was a member of the Immanuel Reformed Church of Christ and a 50-year member of the Adams-Schaefer American Legion Post No. 625 in Klemme.

Survivors include his wife Viola, and two sisters, Hazel Schwartz of East Peoria, Illinois, and Mrs. Frank (Loretta) Guspan of Cleveland, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Organist was Mrs. Marvin Lehman, and casket bearers were Everett Weiland, Roy Jacobs, Leroy Johnson, Glenn Hall, Clark Neary, and George Legge. Military services were conducted by Adams-Schaefer Post No. 625.
