1932 - 2018

Dolores (Schiek) Waldon

Dolores (Schiek) Waldon, known to friends and family as “Dee,” passed away Friday, November 30, 2018, at Clarion Wellness and Rehabilitation, at the age of 86.

Funeral services for Dolores ‘Dee’ Waldon will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at First Lutheran Church, 420 First Street Northwest in Clarion with Pastor Nicole Woodley officiating. Burial will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.

Visitation will be held on Monday, December 3, 2018 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Ewing Funeral Home, 1801 Central Avenue East in Clarion, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Dolores Mae Schiek was born in Readlyn, Iowa, on September 19 1932, to Otto and Lydia Schiek. Dee was later older sister to three brothers: Fred, Rich and John. She began elementary school school in Readlyn, then attended Clarion elementary after her family moved to Clarion. She graduated from Clarion High School in 1950.

After high school, Dee attended the Iowa Teachers College (now University of Northern Iowa) where she earned her teaching certificate in elementary education. Her first teaching job was in Ames, Iowa.

On August 3, 1952, she married her high school sweetheart Melvin Waldon. After Mel graduated from Iowa State, Mel and Dee moved to Dexter, Iowa, where she taught elementary school. Her son Tom was born in 1957. After Dexter, the Waldon family moved to Vinton, Iowa, where Dee continued to teach.

Dee and her family returned to Clarion in 1961, where she began as a mid-year replacement kindergarten teacher. In 1968, Dee and her husband adopted their daughter, Lisa.

Dee taught kindergarten at Clarion, then Clarion-Goldfield Schools, until she retired in May of 2000. She continued to educate children even after retirement, often working as a substitute teacher at all grade levels. Dee valued education and continued hers, earning a Master’s Degree from Drake University.

Dee was an Iowa State Cyclone fan by marriage, and also enjoyed playing the piano, traveling, playing cards, and spending time with her family. Dee was an active member of FLCW, serving on many committees and sharing faith with the women’s circle. She was also active in numerous community groups such as AAUW, TTT, and PEO. She enjoyed playing bridge with her card playing friends.

Dolores will be lovingly remembered by her children Tom (Melanie) and Lisa (Kevin Hill), her grandchildren Mackenzie and Robbie Waldon, and her brother, Rich (Judy). She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Melvin, her parents Otto and Lydia Schiek, and her brothers Fred Schiek and John Schiek.

Memorial donations may be given in Dee’s name to First Lutheran Sew Ladies.
