Mrs. Betty Schlawin, 68, of Garner, who died Saturday, Jan. 21, 1989 at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt were held 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 23 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner with Rev. Msgr. Roger E. O'Brien as celebrant. Mrs. William Doble was lector.

Mrs. Ronald Kumsher, organist, accompanied the choir. Usher was Dick Frein and Robert Kral.

Casket bearers were Peter John Engstler, Bill Engstler, Larry Schisel, Dennis Haefner, Don Hoppel and Don Pederson.

Burial was in St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Garner. Visitation and services by the parish, Rosary Society and C.D. of A. were held at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner.

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Schlawin, the daughter of Peter and Eunice (Baily) Engstler, was born January 7, 1921 at Garner. After graduating from Garner High School she went to Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, received her teaching certificate, and later, her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education at Drake University in Des Moines.

February 5, 1941, she was married to Wayne A. Schlawin at St. Boniface Church Rectory at Garner. Betty taught in the rural schools of Hancock County for 3 years, 2 years at Ventura, 5 years at Klemme and 30 years at Garner. She was truly dedicated to her profession. In the spring of 1983, she retired after 40 years of teaching. Betty had also worked part-time, for many years, at the Blossom Shop and Flowers by Flattery. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, reading and cooking.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Rosary Society, C.D. of A. where she had been Past Grand Regent, sang in the choir, belonged to the Knitting Club, was a N.E.A. and I.S.E.A member and had been on the board of the Ruth Meyer Scholarship Fund.

She is survived by her husband, Wayne Schlawin of Garner and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and 2 brothers, Bernard Engstler and Robert Engstler.
