Harlan George Shafer

Sheridan, Wyo. - Harlan George Shafer, 68, of Sheridan, Wyo., passed away Oct 21, 1991, in Deaconess Medical Center in Billings following a heart attack.

He was born March 22, 1923, in Marble Rock, Iowa, the son of George L. and Eva Shafer.

At the age of 6 months his family moved to Mudd Lake, Idaho. He attended school in Roberts, Idaho. At the age of 16 his family moved to Greene, Iowa, where he graduated from high school in 1940. Harlan served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Following his service, he attended Northern Iowa University, where he graduated with a B.A. degree in business. On June 25, 1949 he married Mary Schlicher in Fort Madison. Iowa. Following marriage, he received his master's degree from Colorado State University in administration. He completed course work for a doctorate at the University of Colorado in Bolder. He worked as a teacher and school administrator in several northern Iowa towns. He then served as high school principal in Worland, Wyo., for three years. Harlan then moved to Covina, Calif., where he was a teacher in Charter Oak High School for 19 years, retiring in 1983.
 
Upon retirement, Harlan and his wife moved to Sheridan, Wyo., to make their home. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sheridan and Sheridan Historical Society. In California he was an active member of the Covina Methodist Church, as well as a past Kiwanis and Lions Club member. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Greene, Iowa, and was a member of the retired Southern California Teachers Association. Harlan was an avid fisherman, hunter, and outdoorsman. He and Mary were also active square dancers.

Survivors include his wife, Mary of Sheridan, Wyo.; his son and daughter-in-law, Grant and Jean Shafer of Oceanside, Calif.; his daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Ernie Bumatay of Palos Verdes, Calif.; his grandchildren, Christina and Craig Bumatay; his sister and husband, Lucille and Ed Ledwig of Saint Charles, Mo.; and his brother and wife, Eugene and Melba Shafer of Chandler, Ariz.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Oct 25, in the First United Methodist Church in Sheridan, Wyo. Cremation has taken place and interment of remains will be in the Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, Calif. Smith Funeral Chapel in Billings is in charge of arrangements. The family requests a memorial donation to 75 Canvas Back Road, Sheridan, Wyo., in lieu of flowers.
