KLEMME CENTENNIAL BOOK |

page last updated - 03 Feb 2021
As part of the Klemme Centennial celebration in 1989 a 400 page book was published to honor and commemorate our family ancestors and area pioneers. Many of the Klemme residents and former Klemme residents shared their photographs to be included in the publication. Due to the time constraints and publication limitations, many of the historical photographs were camera copied but not included in the book. In addition to the 600 photographs that were published in the Family Photo Album Section, there are approximately 700 historical photographs. Only about 400 of the historical photographs were included in the publication. Many of the published photographs will be displayed on these web pages along with many that were not included in the book. A few years after the Klemme Centennial, we were contacted by family members living in California, of Walter R. Bloom who was an early Klemme business owner. They had found items relating to the early days of Klemme and one of the items was a photograph of the town well and pump located in the middle of the intersection of First Street and Main Street. The photograph was taken about 1890 and is the earliest known photograph of the town. The photo may be seen on the KLEMME BUSINESS page.
This book is dedicated to our pioneer ancestors who had the courage to venture forth into the wilderness areas to an uncertain future for themselves and their families. The used their skills and knowledge to provide for their families and their courage and determination to overcome the natural and man made disasters so future generations would enjoy a better world in which to live.
This publication could not have been made possible without the assistance and generosity of the many Klemme residence, past and present, who made available their photograph albums, scrapbooks, and other family heirlooms to be shared with you. A special thank you to the members of the publishing committee: Novella Bredbenner, Dolores (Koerner) Ridder, Ethel (Wellemeyer) Bacon, Thelma (Chambers) Arnold, Gail Linahon, Lynette (Buseman) Nuehring and Diane (Hummel) Stadtlander for their support and assistance with the publication format and proofreading. I would also like to give special recognition to Lyndon ''Pete'' Kilgore. In 1979 he made available all existing back issues of the KLEMME TIMES so they could be microfilmed and preserved for future generations. Much information contained in this publication would have been lost to history if not for his concern in preserving the past issues of the KLEMME TIMES containing the weekly events of the residents of the Klemme area. Unlike most centennial publications, I am not requesting that any errors and omissions be reported to the centennial publishing committee in 2089. Research of printed material and photographs will be continued and made available for future generations. If you have any Klemme material or items of historical interest, please contact me or one of the publishing committee members, so arrangements can be made to preserve the history of Klemme to be enjoyed by the citizens of Klemme during the bicentennial in 2089. -- Thank you -- LaVern Dean Velau -- Klemme, Iowa
